7 Great Movies Of 2021 From Hollywood's Legendary Filmmakers That Needs More Attention

Films are earning less money these days, I'm not talking about Comic book movies. People love superhero shit, and studios really giving us what we desire from those action movies. But we also get the questions every now and then that "why don't they make movies like they used to ?" Big budget epic battle period drama or low budget mind bending masterpieces. Well, as far as I'm concerned I would say we get those kind of movies but little less from what we used to. Here are the 7 Movies from last year that deserved our attention at theaters.

7. Nightmare Alley: Despite winning Best Picture Award and making so many great movies, Guillermo del Toro still struggles to get financing for his movies. With the budget of 60M $ he takes us to New York in 1940s, Nightmare Alley is a psychological thriller film based on the same name novel by William Lindsay Gresham. The Film Stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchet, Toni Collette, William Dafoe, Rooney Mara and Ron Perlman, focuses on Stan Carlisle played by Bradley Cooper, an ambitious carny with a talent of manipulating people. Stan hooks up with the character of Dr. Lilith Ritter played by Cate Blanchet, a corrupted psychiatrist who proves to be as dangerous as he is.

Just like all of Guillermo del Toro’s movies, Nightmare Alley is also a good looking movie. With so many wonderfully constructed sets, beautiful costume and fantastic performances by the actors relly makes the movie worth watching at least once. But it was a box office failure in it’s opening weekend and grossed a total of $7.7 million worldwide.

6. Licorice Pizza : Even though the movie was critically positive and received several nominations ( 79th Golden Globe Awards) and awards (American Film Institute), it failed at box office. Most of the times Paul Thomas Anderson the director of Licorice Pizza, gets major critical and commercial success and often cited as one of the greatest films of the 2000s. Anderson’s The Master (2012), Inherent Vice (2014), Phantom Thread (2017) are most popular ones. Licorice Pizza tells us the story of Gary Valentine and Alana Kane growing up, running around in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. This movie delivers something authentic to the table in the genre of comedy romantic drama.

The best part of the movie is something similar to the Nightmare Alley, the atmosphere that it creates an amazing cinematography. You get these scenes showcase the wonderful landscapes that captured very well.

5. West Side Story : This movie entered in development in 2014 at 20th Century Fox, after 4 years Steven Spielberg was hired to direct the movie and casting began in the month of September in 2018. With the budget of 100M $ Spielberg made this amazing romantic drama West Side Story which is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name. The movie received critically acclaim, with four nominations at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Picture – Musical/Comedy and got eleven nominations at the 27th critics’ Choice Awards, including best picture.

A director like Spielberg making a musical got me really excited but it seems that it didn’t excite as many people as it deserved. The film was a box office bomb, grossing only 53M $ worldwide, a total commercial loss to Disney.

4. House Of Gucci : An American biographical crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott, well known making Gladiator (2000), Prometheus (2012), The Martian (2015). House Of Gucci is based on the book The House Of Gucci : A Sensational Story Of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. The movie follows the character of Patrizia Reggiani played by Lady Gaga and Maurizio Gucci played by Adam Driver, as these two character’s romance turns into a fight for the itallian fashion brand Gucci. Along with Ridley Scott’s direction the screenplay is what that engages the storyline and subplots.

This movie was mad with the budget of 75M $ and grossed over 126M $, maybe it was saved from becoming a disaster at box  but movies like these deserves more.

3. Last Night In Soho : Edgar Wright the director of Baby Driver (2017), Scott Pilgrim VS The World (2010), Hot Fuzz (2007) brought a phenomenal psychological horror film. Last Night In Soho, starring Thomasin McKenzie, Ana Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith and Diana Rigg. This movie is dedicate to the memory of Diana Rigg who died in 2020.

The movie starts with the character of Ellie played by Thomasin McKenzie, who suddenly transported back in time to the 1960s. The movie takes places in both 60s period as well as present time back to back with a great visual brilliance. It’s so amazing to see what Edgar did with just a budget of 43M $, he made so rich visual presentation of the movie that nobody would say it was mad less than 50M $. But like every other movies it failed at box office too.

2. The French Dispatch : An American anthology movie directed by Wes Anderson, follows three different storylines as the French foreign bureau of the fictional Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun Newspaper creates it’s final issue. If you know about Wes Anderson’s previous works you are aware of his unique style, this time he is also back with his original artistic cinematic presentation. The French Dispatch is made with 25M $ and did quiet well creating fascinating experience.

1. The Last Duel : People freak the fuck out when a marvel movie comes to the theater but when it’s about a movie about a period drama with big budget production, great directions, great performances people seems to care less. This movie has the actors who play Batman, Jason Bourne, Kylo Ren and directed by one of the best directors Hollywood had from a long time. The Last Duel is an epic historical battle movie with a powerful drama. Ridley Scott directed the movie with the intentions of presenting something great to the viewers after a long time and he did present that very well but it was a totall disaster at box office. The movie had a budget of 100M $ and it grossed 30.6M $ at box office.

I really hope that we support all the movies that deserves have great numbers at box office, not just only Superhero movies. Yeah! Superhero movies are great but someties movies like Venom: Let There Carnage gets more that what it deserves and movies like The Last Duel gets noting.
